Towards a Competence Profile for Automotive Software Engineering

Abstract

The automotive industry currently is undergoing changes in various aspects. Among the most prominent are new technologies like electric drive or artificial intelligence, especially for autonomous driving. Additionally, connecting the vehicles with each other and the infrastructure becomes more important. Finally, the way of developing and manufacturing vehicles is changing. All these changes impact higher education for future automotive software engineers. This paper considers the competences that should be taught in automotive software engineering (ASE), especially from the viewpoint of the automotive industry. It summarizes surveys, interviews and discussions up to now. It becomes apparent that there is no common agreement on what ASE education should cover (and what not). To support the discussion on ASE education, we propose a framework for content in ASE.
