Software Process Improvement (SPI) aims to achieve quality software products in software companies. Ignoring human factors can cause several types of damage in the software development process. Because, Software development is not a purely technical task, but rather it is a relationship between technical and human factors that interact with each other constantly. Currently, Small Medium Enterprises' (SMEs) software development companies in Malaysia still struggle to implement SPI successfully. Therefore, the main objective of this study is to investigate the empirical evidence based on the human factor perspective for helping Malaysian SMEs' software development companies to implement SPI strategies. A questionnaire‐based survey method was used for gathering information from 79 practitioners. The results indicate that 9 factors (employee awareness, leadership involvement, employee involvement, customer involvement, senior management support, staff experience, staff learning, staff skills, and client support) are considered important for implementing SPI in Malaysian SME software development companies. The involvement of both leadership and employees, and getting support from management are the most important human factors that should be considered during the design process of SPI strategies.

Resumen: Se espera que la ISO/IEC 29119 tenga un impacto favorable en el dominio de las pruebas de software. Sin embargo, en pequeñas empresas en Lima, se ha observado que las pruebas son desordenadas, no logran una adecuada cobertura y el software presenta errores en su operación. En este estudio se hizo una investigación exploratoria en organizaciones que prueban software, para determinar factores de entorno que influyen en el grado de adopción de prácticas de pruebas de software. El análisis se realizó usando un estudio de caso múltiple de cuatro unidades de análisis, considerando dos tipos de organizaciones. Las organizaciones que actuaron como fábricas de software en un esquema contractual (exigente) presentaron un mayor nivel de adhesión a las prácticas del estándar que aquellas que actuaron como parte de un equipo de desarrollo de software. Además el factor Presión Externa es uno de influencia positivo para el primer grupo y de manera negativa para el segundo grupo.Palabras-clave: pruebas de software, mejora de procesos, ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119, ISO/IEC 33063. Exploratory analysis in adopted software testing practices of ISO/IEC 29119-2 in organizations in Lima, PeruAbstract: It is expected for the ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119 to have a favorable impact on this software testing domain. However, in small businesses in Lima, these activities are performed in uncontrolled way, tests do not achieve adequate coverage and the software operates with errors. In this study an exploratory research was performed in organizations conducting software testing, the objective was to determine environment factors to affect the extent of adoption of software testing practices. The analysis was performed using a multiple case study analysis of four units, considering two types of organizations. Organizations that acted as software factories under a contractual scheme presented a higher level of adherence to standard practices than those who acted as part of a software development team. In addition, the External Pressure factor is one of positive influence for the first group and negatively for the second group. ISO/IEC 29110 is intended to help very small entities in improving their software processes. However, this standard is not the only initiative devoted to help organizations in these matters. For instance, ITMark is an established method with an important background in terms of number and diversity of assessments. The aim of this paper is to present a method to assess ISO/IEC 29110 by means of the evaluation performed under the ITMark certification schema built upon an experience factory. To do so, in this paper, authors present, firstly, a mapping for ITMark to ISO/IEC 29110 and, secondly, a study to test the applicability of the assessments made by ITMark in the ISO/IEC 29110 environment taking into account the previous mapping. The main conclusion from this industrial experience is that ITMark can be used as a method for assessing very small entities.
