Towards cost-efficient and stable perovskite solar cells and modules: utilization of self-assembled monolayers

Abstract: Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted extensive attention in recent years due to its advantages like low cost and flexibility. However, the serious charge recombination at the interface of perovskite...

“…Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) are strong options to solve these problems, among many other methods, owing to their track records in efficient PSCs. 171 SAMs were introduced as charge selective contacts for PSCs in 2018. 172 SAMs are regular arrays of organic molecules with athickness of one or few organic molecules formed by the spontaneous adsorption of the anchoring groups, which are functional groups that can be chemically bond to the surface (usually metals or metal oxides).…”

“…Furthermore, the interaction of the SAM end group with perovskites improves the film quality by reducing defects at the interface. 171 Usually a hole transporting head containing an arylamine, an anchor moiety as carboxylic acid (–COOH) or phosphoric acid (–PO(OH) 2 ) to form covalent bonds to the TCO substrate, and a connector between them to aid the self-assembly (Fig. 59) are the most important components of hole-selective SAMs.…”

“…In this sense, one of the most widely used hole transport materials in high-efficiency inverted PSCs is poly[bis(4-phenyl)(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)amine] (PTAA), despite its high-cost production, unstable polymer structure, and low reproducibility. , To get rid of these obstacles to commercialize inverted PSCs, researchers have started to develop new molecules for self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) . SAMs have been previously used to modify transparent conductive oxide (TCO) in organic-based optoelectronic devices. First reports about the application of SAMs as hole transport layers (HTL) in inverted PSCs were in 2018 by our group and others. , Later, SAMs have been used intensively in perovskite solar cells after being commercially available on the market leading to over 22% in PCE. As a larger variety of SAMs is needed due to these developments, we synthesized novel SAMs based on bidentate anchoring groups.…”
