Towards flexible inorganic “mesomaterials”: one-pot low temperature synthesis of mesostructured nanocrystalline titania

Abstract: We hereby report a simple route for the low temperature synthesis of mesoporous nanocrystalline titania involving brief hydrothermal treatment of butanolic precursors and non-ionic tri-block-copolymer surfactant at 100 degrees C, followed by evaporation induced self assembly to make a crack-free flexible film. At no time in the film-forming process is a temperature of more than 120 degrees C reached, thereby permitting the use of substrates that are not stable to higher temperatures.

“…11,12 Poly͑ethylene oxide͒ ͑PEO͒ is widely used as the hydrophilic part of copolymers combining it with other hydrophobic polymers into diblock or triblock molecular architectures. Inorganic precursors other than silica have been also used for this coassembly approach: titania, 13,14 niobium oxide, 15 silicon carbonitrides, 16 and silsesquioxanes. 17,18 Many of these efforts have been reviewed recently.…”

“…HAuCl 4 is reduced simul- taneously into metallic Au during this irradiation process. 33,37 It should be noted that arrays of composite nanoparticles could be obtained only from hybrid micellar films of PS-b-PEO/HAuCl 4 /SG of the order of one monolayer thickness because the inorganic domains in thicker films (e.g. 48 nm), which do not form cylinders perpendicular to the substrate surface, collapse to form irregular arrays after matrix removal.…”

“…A highly humid environment is important during the aging of these films to slow down the evaporation of the water from the films (to provide sufficient time for reorientation and ordering of the mesostructure) and to permit the mesoscopic ordering of the surfactant [95,97,[125][126][127]. Crepaldi et al [58] provided a thorough discussion of the complete synthesis and characterization procedures to obtain ordered mp-TiO 2 films.…”

“…In order to inhibit rapid olation and condensation of the titania precursors to allow self-assembly to occur, protons (H + ions) have been used as inhibitors [88]. Although ligands such as acetylacetonate can also be used to reduce the reactivity of metal alkoxides, they can interfere in the interactions between titanium species and surfactants, so H + is a more widely used inhibitor in the synthesis of surfactant templated mp-TiO 2 films [94][95][96][97]. Using a highly acidic sol prevents uncontrolled condensation of transition metal precursors, which allows slow formation of the inorganic network within the liquid crystal mesophase formed after coating.…”
