Towards Game-based Metrics for Computational Co-Creativity

Abstract: We propose the following question: what gamelike interactive system would provide a good environment for measuring the impact and success of a co-creative, cooperative agent? Creativity is often formulated in terms of novelty, value, surprise and interestingness. We review how these concepts are measured in current computational intelligence research and provide a mapping from modern electronic and tabletop games to open research problems in mixed-initiative systems and computational co-creativity. We propose … Show more

“…Information on the fitness landscapes are crucial for the choice of suitable optimisation algorithms as well as for putting their performance into context. The need for further analysis of existing evaluation functions has also been recognised in other publications as well, see for example recent surveys and vision papers [19,130]. This is the reason we are investigating the function suites in GBEA in more detail.…”

“…Scores range from 0, for no discernible effort, over 5 for settlements where it becomes unclear if this was done by a human or AI, to 10, for an artifact that looks superhuman, or could only have been built manually by a team of experts with a lot of time. The detailed guide for the judges is also available online for competitors as reference 1 .…”

“…In other words, competitors might have created generators that achieved a high value according to an objective function while generating settlements that were unsatisfying to a human. Additionally, creating a meaningful yet well-defined function to optimize for also proved quite hard [1].…”

“…Cooperative games with imperfect information are an interesting research topic not only due to the added challenges posed to researchers, but also because many modern industrial and commercial applications can be seen as examples of cooperation between humans and machines in order to achieve a mutual goal in an uncertain environment. In previous work [4], we surveyed metrics and open problems relating to co-creative and mixed initiative systems, and argued that games, especially cooperative games, are an ideal research platform to address some of these issues.…”
