Towards marker‐assisted selection in pulses: a review

Abstract: Pulses are important sources of proteins in vegetarian diet. However, genetic improvement in production and productivity of pulse crops has been very slow owing to several constraints. The present view of researchers is that the effectiveness and efficiency of conventional breeding can be significantly improved by using molecular markers. Nowadays, molecular markers are routinely utilized worldwide in all major crops as a component of breeding. The pace of development of molecular markers and other genomic sou… Show more

“…Seed germination rate has been used as phenotypic marker for selection of salinity tolerant pigeonpea cultivars [35] where they observed genotypic variability to a greater extent under salt stress conditions. Earlier in chickpea, the parameters like germination percentage, radicle and plumule length and plant survival at maturity have been found effective in differentiating tolerant and sensitive genotypes under saline conditions [36].…”

“…Identification of DNA markers linked to salt tolerance can facilitate marker-assisted selection. A few PCR-based DNA markers, including random-amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD), sequence-tagged microsatellite site (STMS), single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), and simple sequence repeat (SSR) have been developed in mungbean (Kumar et al, 2011;Van et al, 2013). Gupta & Gopalakrishna (2013) also reviewed genetic linkage maps, comparative genome mapping, and gene/quantitative trait loci (QTLs) mapping for agronomically important traits of the genus Vigna.…”

“…es una de las hortalizas más importantes alrededor del mundo. La pungencia y el color son los atributos más importantes de este cultivo utilizado ampliamente en los productos alimenticios y en diversas aplicaciones farmacológicas (Kumar et al, 2011 Las enfermedades causadas por hongos, bacterias y virus son el mayor problema en la producción del chile (Sandoval, 1993). Dentro de las enfermedades causadas por hongos se encuentra la pudrición de la raíz, también conocida como marchitez o secadera.…”
