“…This lack of lethality may be ascribed to interspecific differences of PCB congeners on the activation of the AhR; according to these data, tree swallows have lower sensitivity to PCBs than other avian species [5,7,8,40]. Similarly, the potency of dioxin-like PCBs with similar chemical structures to dioxins (e.g., 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzodioxin) is toxicologically categorized by TEFs [41,42]. Thus PCB 77 (dioxin-like PCB congener), with a TEF of 0.0004 in kestrels (Falco sparverius), 0.005 in turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo), and 0.05 in chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus), should likely have significant adverse effects [6,14,43].…”

“…Based on the TEQ of PCB 77, the prediction would have been elevated tree swallow embryo mortality, especially when the observed TEQ-related effects documented across a range of species are considered [32,41]. However, this outcome was not observed.…”

“…Due to the similarity in toxicity and mechanisms, the concept of toxic equivalency factors (TEF) has been used for risk assessment and regulatory control for DLC [17,18]. The TEF is the relative potency of biological effects assigned to each congener relative to that of TCDD on the basis of available in vivo and in vitro data [17,18].…”

“…We found little difference in the results when examining the sum or the individual congeners, so we present only the sums of these congeners. We compared lipid-adjusted serum levels of workers who had potential dioxin or furan exposure with the blood levels of workers with no workplace dioxin or furan exposure experience using Dunnett's t-test for dioxin and furan congeners, the PCBs, and the TCDD toxic equivalents for the dioxin and furan congeners (TEQ) ( Van den Berg et al, 1998). TEQ estimates provide a summing of the theoretical TCDD-like toxicity across all of the 2,3,7,8-congeners detected among study subjects and thus provide a basis for comparing the different dioxin and furan profiles received from either TCP or PCP.…”
