Toxicity and Biodegradation in Sandy Soil Contaminated by Lubricant Oils

Abstract: The objective of this study was to evaluate the environmental behavior of different types of automotive lubricant oils. Based on respirometry assays the biodegradability was monitored, and toxicological tests were executed to assess the lubricants toxicity before and after microbial activity. Used oil was the most biodegradable, however, it was the most toxic. Also, all lubricants presented toxicity even after biodegradation due to 40% Eruca sativa germination inhibition and a low LC50 to Eisenia foetida (0.50… Show more

“…For this assay the methodology of Lopes (2010) was adapted, where 50 mL plastic containers were filled with 50 g of sandy soil moistened with 17.5 mL of solution (landfill leachate + deionized water), according to the same treatments applied in the direct impact test. Seeds were then sown where 10 (ten) cucumber seeds were placed at diametrically equal distances above the soil.…”

“…Inhibition values higher than 40% in the test-organisms are considered toxic, while non-toxic inhibition values range is between 0 and of 10% of the test organism. Early toxicity inhibition is between 10 and 40% of non-germinated test-organisms (Lopes et al, 2010).…”
