“…A trend of decreasing seroprevalence has been observed in many European countries and the USA over the past few decades, probably attributed, at least in part, to the hygienic improvements in animal husbandry. [50] On the other hand, stable or increasing seroprevalences have been reported in other parts of the world,[51] and an overall global seroprevalence of 30% has been described. [52] This high burden superimposed with the fact that there is no effective treatment for latent toxoplasmosis poses a grave risk for the development of psychiatric illnesses in the vulnerable population.…”

“…The apicomplexan Toxoplasma gondii is a global zoonotic parasite affecting humans and animals, both terrestrial and aquatic, that causes a cosmopolitan food and waterborne infection, with an estimated 1–2 billion (approximately 30%) of the world's population infected (Bahia‐Oliveira, Gomez‐Marin, & Shapiro, ). For successful transmission, the parasite relies on an heteroxenous life cycle involving an intermediate host, virtually all warm‐blooded animals, wherein the parasite multiplies by asexual reproduction leading to intracellular cysts developing in muscles and other organs and a definitive host (wild and domestic felids) in which sexual reproduction results in the shedding through faeces of countless infective oocysts in the environment.…”

“…Toxoplasmosis is a disease produced by the Toxoplasma gondii protozoan parasite, which is a cosmopolitan food and waterborne infection with an estimated 1 to 2 billion (approximately 30%) of the world's population infected ( Bahia-Oliveira et al, 2017 ). The most efficacious treatment for this infection is based on Pyrimethamine with Sulfadiazine.…”
