Trace metal concentrations in suspended particles, sediments and clams (Ruditapes philippinarum) from Jiaozhou Bay of China

Abstract: Suspended particulate matter (SPM), sediments and clams were collected at three sites in Jiaozhou Bay to assess the magnitude of trace metal pollution in the area. Metal concentrations in SPM (Cu: 40.11-203; Zn: 118-447; Pb: 50.1-132; Cd: 0.55-4.39; Cr: 147.6-288; Mn: 762-1670 microg/g), sediments (Cu: 17.64-34.26; Zn: 80.79-110; Pb: 24.57-49.59; Cd: 0.099-0.324; Cr: 41.6-88.1; Mn: 343-520 microg/g) and bivalves (Cu: 6.41-19.76; Zn: 35.5-85.5; Pb: 0.31-1.01; Cd: 0.51-0.67; Mn: 27.45-67.6 microg/g) are comparab… Show more

“…Decapod crustaceans do not regulate body concentrations of non-essential metals. Cd has no biological function or requirement and Cd concentration in marine organisms are generally low (Blackmore et al 1998;Kress et al 1998;Chou et al 2000;Storelli et al 2001;Li et al 2006;Sanchez-Chardi et al 2007). Zn and Fe were present in large quantities in the tissues both C. longicollis and P. semisulcatus.…”

“…This could also be due to fertilizer application in nearby area are transported to the estuaries by leaching and erosion as agriculture is also an important activity of the village folks besides fishing. According to Li [23], bivalves do not regulate Cd usually accumulate this element. Hence, green mussel might be able to regulate Cd in their body.…”

“…Because of the importance of sediments to the overall quality of aquatic systems, sediment analysis is often included in environmental assessment studies (Adekola and Eletta 2007;Li et al 2006;Jain et al 2005;Horsfall and Spiff 2002). To evaluate the heavy metal burden in the environment, it is usually not sufficient to measure only total concentrations, but also to establish the proportions of heavy metals present in various, soluble fractions, which are commonly quantified by a sequential extraction procedure (Chester and Hughes 1967;Tessier et al 1979, Forstner andWittmann 1981;Horowitz et al 1999;Stamatis et al 2006).…”
