Track reconstruction with the silicon strip tracker of the proton CT Phase 2 scanner

Abstract: We present algorithms for the proton track reconstruction for the Phase II proton CT scanner designed and built by the pCT collaboration. The entrance and exit telescopes of the scanner consist of four planes of silicon sensors with horizontal and vertical strips for proton track reconstruction. The goal of the track reconstruction is to allow usage of submillimeter voxels for subsequent image reconstruction. A dedicated algorithm was developed that recovers protons that traversed the dead areas at sensor join… Show more

“…The Geant4 simulation correctly reproduced the drop in tracking efficiencies due to the vertical gaps in sensitivity between individual SSDs also seen in the experimental profiles. One should note that the missing coordinates due to the gaps were reconstructed based on the information from the other tracking planes and knowledge of the gap coordinates …”

“…Prior to image reconstruction the raw data are preprocessed to calculate the coordinates of the tracker hits, to associate the hits with proton tracks [16], and to derive the WEPL from the 5-stage detector digitizations according to the calibration described in Section IV.…”
