Traditional cooking practices and preferences for stove features among women in rural Senegal: Informing improved cookstove design and interventions

Abstract: Nearly half the world’s population burns solid fuel for cooking, heating, and lighting. The incomplete combustion of these fuels is associated with detrimental health and environmental effects. The design and distribution of improved cookstoves that increase combustion efficiency and reduce indoor air pollution are a global priority. However, promoting exclusive and sustainable use of the improved stoves has proved challenging. In 2012, we conducted a survey in a community in rural Senegal to describe stove ow… Show more

“…In the same year, LPG was the primary cooking fuel for 10% of SSA urban households. LPG and natural gas are barely used in rural areas, mainly due to lack of distribution systems [20] and the relatively high and fluctuating price of the fuel in combination with very low-income levels [21]. Finally, electricity, the cleanest cooking solution with respect to HAP, is primarily used in Southern Africa.…”

“…The ability to accommodate different pot size and shapes and the ability to quickly build temporary stoves enable the household to satisfy their diverse needs, including multitasking and outside cooking [66], which is likely to explain why the respondent ranked firewood highest for operational flexibility. Most imported MCS is available in fixed structures that force households to compromise cultural and demographic needs [23,42,67]. Firewood is also ranked highest by the respondents for ease of maintenance, another influential criterion for adoption and sustained use [68].…”

“…The habit of cooking over open fires, the easy access to fuel (firewood), and the scarce economic resources have a marked impact on the persistent use of traditional cooking, gas use, or both. Reports demonstrate that these communities appreciate the taste of food cooked with firewood, compared to food prepared with LPG (23). This remains a major barrier for the use of clean fuels such as LPG.…”
