Traditional Knowledge to Contemporary Medication in the Treatment of Infectious Disease Dengue: A Review

Abstract: Dengue has become a worldwide affliction despite incessant efforts to search for a cure for this long-lived disease. Optimistic consequences for dengue vaccine are implausible as the efficiency is tied to previous dengue virus (DENV) exposure and a very high cost is required for large-scale production of vaccine. Medicinal plants are idyllic substitutes to fight DENV infection since they constitute important components of traditional medicine and show antiviral properties, although the mechanism behind the act… Show more

“…Dengue is a complex disease, which has made the discovery of effective therapies difficult. Studies support the view that herbal medication could be useful for treating DENV infections, which could reduce the risk of severe dengue if started soon after exposure to the virus [ 6 , 7 , 8 ].…”

“…However, further research is required to assess its effectiveness and safety in humans (Do and Reau 2020). Moreover, a wide range of naturally occurring substances, including mangiferin-punicalagin, alphamangostin, geraniin, curcumin-flavonoids, and quercetin derived from various plant sources have shown activity against DENV (Clain et al 2018;Fitmawati et al 2021;Kowalczyk et al 2021;Santhi et al 2021;Patil et al 2021;Dhiman et al 2022) .…”

“…DENV is believed to have emerged from a sylvatic cycle with the primary hosts being non-human primates to a human epidemic/endemic cycle some 1000–1500 years ago [ 3 ]. Since its emergence into the human population treatment for DENV will primarily have been through the use of natural medicines which were believed to have anti-inflammatory or antipyretic activity [ 4 ], and thus it is possible that some plants used traditionally to treat febrile diseases contain bioactive constituents with antiviral activity.…”
