Training systems and rootstocks on yield and agronomic performance of ‘Syrah’ grapevine in the Brazilian semiarid

Abstract: The Vale do São Francisco stands out among the main Brazilian wine regions, and ‘Syrah’ is a grape cultivar very important to produce red wines. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of training systems and rootstocks on the yield and other agronomic variables of ‘Syrah’ grapevines during eight consecutive harvests in the tropical semiarid environment in the Vale do São Francisco. An experiment was carried out in Petrolina, state of Pernambuco, with ‘Syrah’ trained to lyre and espalier syst… Show more

“…Along with this, other factors, such as water and nutrient absorption, benefit from a more effective root system distribution, derived from the use of certain rootstocks, which may regulate plant growth and crop yield (Jin et al 2016). The 'IAC 766' , which is less vigorous than 'IAC 572' ( Leão and Chaves 2019), may allow greater water and nutrient absorption, thus increasing the berry weight of 'BRS Cora' grapes regardless of the trellis system adopted. Berry resistance to compression was affected by the trellis systems, and berries from grapevines trained to lyre and VSP showed the lowest resistance to compression: 9.35 and 9.39 N, respectively (Table 2).…”

“…The use of rootstock has become an indispensable practice, as the interaction between it and the scion cultivar, climate, and soil of each producing region allows for satisfactory results in grape production (Souza et al, 2015). Furthermore, the use of rootstocks represents a strategy for adaptation to abiotic stresses, such as saline, dry, humid, acidic, alkaline, shallow, compacted, or lowfertility soils, as well as biotic stresses, such as pests and diseases Chaves, 2019).…”

“…In this trellis system, the grapevine can be trained in different sizes to adapt to vegetative growth [16]. The Vitis vinifera cultivars are trained until 1.35 to 1.60 m from de ground [17]. The Vitis labrusca under subtropical conditions are trained until 1.00 to 1.80 m from the ground [12,18,19].…”
