Trait Theories

Abstract: This entry reviews the trait theory tradition in the discipline of communication. Specifically, a general overview of the concept of traits is provided; types of traits (behavioral, emotional, and cognitive) are differentiated; theoretical positions regarding the origin and development of traits are summarized; issues regarding the relationship between traits and behavior are examined; and weaknesses and limitations to current trait theory and research are considered.
