Trans fatty acids and weight gain

Abstract: Increasing rates of obesity have stimulated research into possible contributing factors, including specific dietary components such as trans fatty acids (TFAs). This review considers the evidence for an association between TFA intake and weight gain. It concludes that there is limited but consistent evidence from epidemiological studies, and from a primate model, that increased TFA consumption may result in a small additional weight gain. Data from a long-term study in a primate model suggest that TFA may have… Show more

“…32 In the Nurses' Health Study, a 1% higher energy intake from total TFA was associated with a weight gain of 0.55 kg in normal weight women (defined as BMI o25 kg/m 2 ) and 1.06 kg in overweight women over 8 years of follow-up. 1 In our study, a stronger association between absolute intake of R-TFA and changes in weight was also found among women with BMI X25 kg/m 2 compared with women with BMI o25 kg/m 2 , although in the opposite direction.…”

“…TFA can be gener ated in the rumen, the first chamber of the stomach in rumin ant animals, due to micro bial ferment a tion (thus dairy products and meat natur ally contain them) or through the indus trial process of oil hydro gen a tion (Bhardwaj et al , 2011). The poten tial role of these fatty acids in weight gain has been the topic of a recent review (Thompson et al , 2011). However, results from both cell and rodent exper i mental studies concern ing TFA's effects on glucose and lipid oxid a tion as well as body weight and body compos i tion are conflict ing (Thompson et al , 2011;Ochiai et al , 2013).…”
