Transaction Costs, Information Technologies, and the Choice of Marketplace among Farmers in Northern Ghana

Abstract: Using a transactions costs framework, we examine the impact of information and communication technologies (mobile phones and radios) use on market participation in developing country agricultural markets using a novel transaction-level data set of Ghanaian farmers. Our analysis of the choice of markets by farmers suggests that market information from a broader range of markets may not always induce farmers to sell in more distant markets; instead farmers may use broader market information to enhance their barg… Show more

“…The case of avocado farmers in Kenya for farmers, particularly those located in remote areas (Hiroyuki et al, 2010;Zanello et al, 2012). The finding that gender of the manager significantly influences avocado income could be attributed to differential access to resources that are necessary for producing high-quality fruits for the export market as has been well documented in a number of studies in Sub-Saharan Africa (Quisumbing, 1995).…”

“…These support services provide an enabling environment for the uptake of improved technologies by lowering transaction costs associated with the search for information on markets and new technologies. Transaction costs associated with poor infrastructure and inadequate access to market information increase input prices, on the one hand, and lower output prices, on the other, thereby reducing farmers' profit margins and hence act as barriers to adoption of improved technologies (Zeller et al 1998;Hiroyuki et al 2010;Jack 2011;Zanello et al 2012). Thus, adoption of CAWT is likely to be high where the associated transaction costs are deemed to be low.…”

“…Such scholars showed that mobile phones resulted in reduced price dispersion across markets (e.g. Aker, 2008;Tack & Aker, 2014) and increased crop prices, presumably due to increased bargaining power (Lee & Bellemare, 2013;Zanello, Srinivasan & Shankar, 2014). Some authors found that the mobile phone led to increased market participation by farmers, but only for perishable crops (Muto & Yamano, 2009;Egyir et al, 2011).…”

“…Remarkably, mobile phones do not influence farmers' bargaining position, contrarily to quantitative research such as Lee and Bellemare (2013) and Zanello et al (2014). Those authors studied correlations between mobile phones and crop-prices and market participation respectively.…”
