Transcranial direct current stimulation in children and adolescents: a comprehensive review

Abstract: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation method that has shown promising results in various neuropsychiatric disorders in adults. This review addresses the therapeutic use of tDCS in children and adolescents including safety, ethical, and legal considerations. There are several studies addressing the dosage of tDCS in children and adolescents by computational modeling of electric fields in the pediatric brain. Results suggest halving the amperage used in adults to obta… Show more

“…However, there are some general and specific points that need to be considered depending on NIBS protocol and the study population (e.g., healthy volunteers or patients). Safety issues on the use of rTMS and tDCS in adults and adolescents are reviewed extensively elsewhere (Rossi et al, 2009; Krishnan et al, 2015; Bikson et al, 2016; Palm et al, 2016) and are summarized below, as a full description of them is beyond the scope of this review article.…”

“…As such, it has been recommended that brain stimulation for pure cognitive enhancement should be delayed until the patient has reached the state of intellectual maturity (Maslen et al, 2015). However, since tDCS can produce positive results in various psychiatric patients, the use of tDCS among children and adolescents who need treatment has been explored (Fiocchi et al, 2016; Gschwind and Seeck, 2016; Muszkat et al, 2016; Palm et al, 2016). …”

“…Regarding the functional effects of tDCS in healthy children, some studies on cognitive, motor, and learning processes have been performed (Palm et al, 2016). In a recent study, Ciechanski and Kirton (in press) Table 1).…”
