Transcranial magnetic stimulation

Abstract: There is enough evidence of the efficacy and safety of TMS in depression to include this technique in the therapeutic protocols of major depression. However, more research is needed on the use of this technique in other psychiatric and nonpsychiatric disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder, persistent auditory hallucinations, attention-deficit disorder with hyperactivity and tinnitus.

“…Mixed findings have been reported when considering the efficacy of rTMS. The results of some studies suggest that rTMS might be a useful treatment for tinnitus (Kleinjung et al, 2008;Khedr et al, 2008;Lopez-Ibor et al, 2008). Lee et al, 2008 did not report statistically significant improvements.…”

“…Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) might be of value in detecting lesions in the limbic system, temporal lobe, or the prefrontal cortex. However, TMS is not suitable to detect deep-seated lesions neither for the hypothalamus nor for the midbrain (Lopez-Ibor et al, 2008;O'Shea & Walsh, 2007).…”
