Transcriptome of the Invasive Brown Marmorated Stink Bug, Halyomorpha halys (Stål) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae)

Abstract: Halyomorpha halys (Stål) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), the brown marmorated stink bug, is an invasive agricultural and nuisance pest rapidly expanding its incidence in North America. This voracious pest poses a significant threat to rural and urban agriculture, especially to specialty crops such as apples, grapes and ornamentals, as well as staple crops including soybean and corn. The object of this study was to generate transcript sequence resources for H. halys. RNA-seq libraries derived from distinct develop… Show more

“…PUTs potentially associated with organisms of the genera Pantoea , Erwinia and Nosema , which correspond to known pentatomid symbionts [45,56,57], were identified through Blastx comparisons with representative sequences present in the NR database. These comparisons involved the full set of assembled PUTs rather than those that had been explicitly vetted by the NCBI TSA, a vetting which involves removal of putative contaminant sequences, comprising microbial symbionts.…”

“…All 4 protein sequences were predicted to possess seven transmembrane domains and they were highly divergent, with amino acid sequence identities of 20-30% when compared with ORs from different species (Fig. 1) (Supplementary material S2), a common phenomenon observed between insect ORs within and between species (Cao et al, 2014;Hull et al, 2012;Sparks et al, 2014;Zhou et al, 2014), except for the pheromone receptors (PRs) in Lepidoptera insects and Orco (Vosshall and Hansson, 2011;Grosse-Wilde et al, 2011;Liu et al, 2012;Zhang et al, 2013b).…”

Building on transcriptomic data, genome projects are also in progress for other pest species within the same infraorder as Oncopeltus , such as the stink bug Halyomorpha halys [14, 15].…”
