Transcriptomic responses to heat stress and bleaching in the elkhorn coral Acropora palmata

Abstract: The emergence of genomic tools for reef-building corals and symbiotic anemones comes at a time when alarming losses in coral cover are being observed worldwide. These tools hold great promise in elucidating novel and unforeseen cellular processes underlying the successful mutualism between corals and their dinoflagellate endosymbionts Symbiodinium spp. Since thermal stress triggers a breakdown in the symbiosis (coral bleaching), measuring the transcriptomic response to thermal stress-induced bleaching offers a… Show more

“…Extreme temperatures may impede the production of OM as it is highly sensitive and vulnerable to short-term thermal stress (Desalvo et al, 2008(Desalvo et al, , 2010Maor-Landaw et al, 2014). Although the exact mechanism has not yet been fully resolved, our study provides evidence that daytime exposure to extreme temperature in variable thermal conditions adversely affects calcification and dampens the stimulation of skeletal growth in P. damicornis at elevated temperature.…”

“…Similarly, the genes that show a reduced reaction to heat stress in the tolerant corals are comprised of many genes and molecular pathways previously shown to change in expression during heat stress exposure (35)(36)(37)(44)(45)(46). However, our analysis goes a step further to reveal that many of these genes are frontloaded under control conditions in HV corals, suggesting that constitutive transcriptional activity may be altered by natural environmental exposures in the more tolerant population.…”

“…83 and references therein). Those studies used high throughput sequencing to obtain large libraries of expressed sequence tags representing host, symbiont, or holobiont transcripts; smaller scale differential gene expression libraries originating from isolated algal endosymbionts; or cDNA microarray analysis of endosymbiont gene expression in hospite.…”
