Transformation Approach to Model Online Gaming Traffic

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a transformation scheme used to analyze online gaming traffic properties and develop a traffic model. We analyze the packet size and the inter departure time distributions of a popular first‐person shooter game (Left 4 Dead) and a massively multiplayer online role‐playing game (World of Warcraft) in order to compare them to the existing scheme. Recent online gaming traffic is erratically distributed, so it is very difficult to analyze. Therefore, our research focuses on a transformati… Show more

“…Other MMORPGs have also been modelled: Lineage [16] and World of Legend [17]. All the previously listed models are based on a methodology proposed in [18]; however, a different traffic model for WoW [19] is based on a transformational scheme developed for the highly erratic network traffic of online games.…”

“…Such models are also useful for network capacity planning and optimization. However, the traffic of online games in general is very difficult to model [7] and strongly dependant on player behaviour at the application level [8]. What must be taken into account is that an MMORPG allows a wide range of activities, from picking flowers to fighting dragons with the help of some friends, and logically, the game interactivity and usage of network resources vary significantly depending on the deployed task.…”

“…Simulation of MMORPG traffic of different behaviours and different access networks is presented in [13], while influence of different TCP versions on coexistence of MMORPG and FTP traffic is investigated in [14]. Shin et al [15] propose a novel method for modelling the network traffic of games. They analyze packet size and inter-arrival times of WoW and first person shooter game Left 4 Dead (L4D) by Turtle Rock Studios.…”

“…In the figure, Analytical Model is a result of analysis for each online game. Since online gaming traffic is typically messy data that is very difficult to analyze, we already studied an analytical model designing method for gaming traffic in a preliminary work [16].…”
