Transfusion support in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation

Abstract: Transfusion support for hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is an essential part of supportive care, and compatible blood should be transfused into recipients. As leukocyte antigen (HLA) matching is considered first and as the blood group does not impede HSCT, major, minor, bidirectional, and RhD incompatibilities occur that might hinder transfusion and cause adverse events. Leukocyte reduction in blood products is frequently used, and irradiation should be performed for blood products, except for p… Show more

“…Leukocyte reduction was performed using a filter for packed red cells, or a pre-storage leukocyte-filtered packed red cell (FRBC) component was used for transfusion. In the case of platelets, most patients received apheresis platelets, and if apheresis platelets were unavailable, platelet concentrate was regarded as one-sixth of apheresis platelets in this study [18].…”

“…There was a significant difference between the PC and non‐PC groups in terms of both the frequency and amount of blood transfusions received. Transfusions are frequently performed in patients with HM 47 ; however, transfusions at the EOL are an issue. Identifying transfusions as aggressive care is problematic because blood transfusions serve as a vital service for improving the quality of life at EOL for some patients with HMs.…”

“…For bidirectional incompatibility, the RBCs must be group O, while for platelet concentrates and fresh frozen plasma, group AB must be transfused (Table 5). An increased number of transfused units is noted for major and bidirectional incompatibilities compared to minor incompatibilities [40,41]. Platelet transfusion options may be expanded by subgrouping the A antigen.…”
