“…Its expression appears to be nerve‐dependent, because it is not expressed in the limb bud or in regenerating aneurogenic limbs (Fekete & Brockes, 1988; Ferretti & Brockes, 1991; Gordon & Brockes, 1988). Three keratins, keratins 8 and 18 and a newt type II keratin, NvKII, are expressed in newt blastema cells (Ferretti, Brockes, & Brown, 1991; Ferretti, Fekete, Patterson, & Lane, 1989). NvKII and 9G1 are also expressed in the AEC of the newt limb blastema.…”

“…Tazaki et al looked for genes upregulated during both tail and limb regeneration using a macroarray (Tazaki et al, 2005). A total of 15 genes were identified as being in common, including keratin 8, which had already been identified as differentially regulated during newt limb regeneration (Ferretti et al, 1989). When Tazaki's list of tail regeneration is compared with limb regeneration data from Pearl (Pearl et al, 2008), using unigene identifiers, a few genes can be identified as common to both lists (C.W.B., unpublished observations).…”

“…However, in amphibians, such keratin gene expression patterns have not been described. There are several reports of keratin expression in amphibians (Ferretti et al, 1989(Ferretti et al, , 1991(Ferretti et al, , 1993Tsonis et al, 1992a,b;Ferretti, 1997, 1999;Ferretti and Ghosh, 1997;Tazawa et al, 2006). At least three antibodies recognize WE (and normal keratinocytes) (WE3, 4, and 6).…”
