Transport in Two-Dimensional Disordered Semimetals

Abstract: We theoretically study transport in two-dimensional semimetals. Typically, electron and hole puddles emerge in the transport layer of these systems due to smooth fluctuations in the potential. We calculate the electric response of the electron-hole liquid subject to zero and finite perpendicular magnetic fields using an effective medium approximation and a complimentary mapping on resistor networks. In the presence of smooth disorder and in the limit of weak electron-hole recombination rate, we find for small … Show more

“…Away from the neutrality point, the linear field dependence eventually saturates at the strongest (but still classical) fields. Such strong dependence of the magnetoresistance on the carrier density distinguishes the recombination mechanism from the previously proposed extreme quantum [85][86][87] and classical [77][78][79] theories. Magnetoresistance observed in experiments on compensated two-component systems 34,36 does exhibit the essential qualitative features of the recombination mechanism.…”

“…As a remark, we would like to mention a recent theoretical study of the charge transport in two-dimensional disordered semimetals by Knap et al [40]. In that work it was found that electron and hole puddles, due to smooth fluctuations of the potential, are responsible for a large resistance peak in the CNR measured in HgTe QWs by Olshanetsky et al [41].…”

“…Our theory can be further extended to inhomogeneous samples in the spirit of Ref. [55]. In this case, the result (3) is expected to hold for arbitrary system sizes with W corresponding to the typical size of macroscopic inhomogeneities.…”
