PurposeThe success of a supply chain is highly reliant on effective inventory and ordering decisions. This paper systematically reviews and analyzes the literature on inventory ordering decisions conducted using behavioral experiments to inform the state-of-the-art.Design/methodology/approachThis paper presents the first systematic review of this literature. We systematically identify a body of 101 papers from an initial pool of over 12,000.FindingsExtant literature and industry observations posit that decision makers often deviate from optimal ordering behavior prescribed by the quantitative models. Such deviations are often accompanied by excessive inventory costs and/or lost sales. Understanding how humans make inventory decisions is paramount to minimize the associated consequences. To address this, the field of behavioral operations management has produced a rich body of research on inventory decision-making using behavioral experiments. Our analysis identifies primary research clusters, summarizes key learnings and highlights opportunities for future research in this critical decision-making area.Practical implicationsThe findings will have a significant impact on future research on behavioral inventory ordering decisions while informing practitioners to reach better ordering decisions.Originality/valuePrevious systematic reviews have explored behavioral operations broadly or its subdisciplines such as judgmental forecasting. This paper presents a systematic review that specifically investigates the state-of-the-art of inventory ordering decisions using behavioral experiments.

An inventory transportation problem of manufacturing organization focusing on several stakeholders such as manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, retailers and customers is addressed in this paper. The research study considered multi-echelon, multi-product, multimodal and multi-period scenario. The mathematical model in the form of mixed integer nonlinear programming is formulated to minimize the total cost associated with transportation, inventory holding and operational activities. A mathematical formulation based heuristic approach, which comprises of four algorithms, is proposed for solving purpose. The proposed heuristic approach considers the behavioural tendencies of stakeholders pertaining to the selection of shipment routes, transportation mode choice decisions and amount of products to be shipped. Fifteen practical problem instances are solved by using the developed heuristic approach while considering the behavioural aspects of stakeholders. Insights obtained from results will be beneficial for manufacturing organizations in making informed decisions related to transportation planning considering stakeholder's behavioural tendencies.

Supply Chain Decisions and Coordination under the Combined Effect of Overconfidence and Fairness Concern

The purpose of this study was to examine the joint effect of overconfidence and fairness concern on supply chain decisions and design contracts to achieve a win-win situation within the supply chain. For this study, a centralized supply chain model was established without considering the retailers’ overconfidence and fairness concern. Furthermore, the retailers’ overconfidence and fairness concerns were introduced into the decentralized supply chain, while the Stackelberg game model between the manufacturer and the retailer was built. Furthermore, an innovative supply chain contract, i.e., buyback contract, with promotional cost sharing was designed to achieve supply chain coordination along with overconfidence and fairness concern. Finally, a numerical analysis was also conducted to analyze the effect of overconfidence, fairness concern, and the validity of the contract. The principal findings of the study include the positive correlation between retailers’ overconfidence and optimal order quantity, sales effort, expected utility, and profit. Although the order quantity and sales efforts were not affected by the fairness concern of the retailer, the contract achieved coordination with a win-win outcome when the level of overconfidence and fairness concern was moderate.
