Eagle's syndrome, the famous discovery of W. Eagle, is associated with repeated episodes of pain on rotating the neck, dysphagia and referred otalgia due to elongation of styloid process or ossified stylohyoid. Familiarity with Eagle's syndrome shows that its symptoms can be easily confused with other craniomandibular diseases. Since it is a rare clinical entity, its diagnosis is often hard to make, especially in the absence of sound clinical knowledge and good radiographs. Depending on the position of styloid process in relation to underlying anatomical structures, symptoms vary considerably, and in severe cases continuous compression of the carotid artery can lead to stroke and even death. The treatment of choice is mainly styloidectomy; however some conservative treatment is still being practiced. Very few studies have been reported in the literature classifying the elongation and calcification patterns of styloid process. In this review we aim to spread light on the epidemiology, clinical manifestation, diagnosis, and therapy for Eagle's syndrome and also target to help the general practitioner in differential diagnosis with other conditions that can provide similar signs and symptoms.

Propósito: la relación del síndrome de Eagle con la muerte súbita y las ciencias forenses ha sido poco descrita en la literatura; entonces, se hace necesario considerar esta alteración anatomo-patológica tanto desde el punto de vista clí-nico como forense, dado que su escasa sintomatología no permite hacer un diagnóstico oportuno, lo cual puede llevar a la muerte ante ciertas condiciones físicas preexistentes como la enfermedad cardiaca o vascular. Temas: la elongación de la apófisis estiloides y la calcificación del ligamento estilohioideo han sido reportadas como una alteración que produce dolor en el cuello y la cabeza, conocida como el síndrome de Eagle. Desarrollo: se presenta el caso de un hombre de 48 años, con cardiopatía de base y cuya causa de muerte, después de descartar causas toxicoló-gicas, se correlacionó con los hallazgos y con una enfermedad cardiaca subyacente. Conclusiones: las alteraciones anatomo-patológicas deben ser consideradas al momento de iniciar las necropsias en caso de que se haya producido la muerte o alguna alteración durante la manipulación del cuello, como en las terapias físicas y en los deportes de contacto, generando responsabilidades médico-legales.Palabras clave: apófisis estiloides, ligamento estilohioideo, muerte súbita, osificación, senos carotídeos, síndrome de Eagle.

Eagle's syndrome (ES) sometimes called styloid or stylohyoid syndrome is defined as the symptomatic elongation of the styloid process or mineralisation of the stylohyoid ligament. The symptoms related to this condition can be confused with those attributed to a wide variety of facial neuralgias. We report a 34-year-old male patient who presented with a recurrent neck pain and dysphagia. He was diagnosed to have an elongated styloid process. An intraoral transtonsillar shortening of the styloid process was done. We discuss the clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment of ES as well as a review of the literature.
