Travel time models for double-deep automated storage and retrieval systems

This paper addresses an order picking problem in a multi-aisle automated warehouse, in which a single storage/ retrieval (S/R) machine performs storage and retrieval operations. When retrieval requests consist of multiple items and the items are in multiple stock locations, the S/R machine must travel to several storage locations to complete a customer order. The objective is to minimize the total time traveled by the S/R machine to complete the retrieval process of customer orders at the shortest time. First, we formulate the problem as a nonlinear programming model. Then, we propose a heuristic to solve the problem. Finally, we provide numerical experiments to evaluate the performance of the proposed heuristic. The results show that as the number of items in customer order increases, the heuristic shows a better performance by obtaining solutions close to optimal but in very small amount of times.

Process Segmentation Typology in Czech Companies

This article describes process segmentation typology during business process management implementation in Czech companies. Process typology is important for a manager's overview of process orientation as well as for a manager's general understanding of business process management. This article provides insight into a process-oriented organizational structure. The first part analyzes process segmentation typology itself as well as some original results of quantitative research evaluating process segmentation typology in the specific context of Czech company strategies. Widespread data collection was carried out in 2006 and 2013. The analysis of this data showed that managers have more options regarding process segmentation and its selection. In terms of practicality and ease of use, the most frequently used method of process segmentation (managerial, main, and supportive) stems directly from the requirements of ISO 9001. Because of ISO 9001:2015, managers must now apply risk planning in relation to the selection of processes that are subjected to process management activities. It is for this fundamental reason that this article focuses on process segmentation typology.

Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (AS/RS) are used in high velocity distribution centers to provide accurate and fast order processing. While almost every industrial system is comprised of many aisles, most of the academic research on the operational aspects of AS/RS is devoted to single-aisle systems, probably due to the broadly accepted hypothesis proposing that an m aisles system can be modeled as m 1-aisle independent systems. In this article we present two multi-aisles sequencing approaches and evaluate their performance when all the aisles are managed independently first, and then in a global manner. Computational experiments conducted on a multi-aisle AS/RS simulation model clearly demonstrate that a multi-aisle system cannot be accurately represented by multiple single-aisle systems. The numerical results demonstrate that, when dealing with random storage, globally sequencing multi-aisle AS/RS leads to makespan reductions ranging from 14% up to 29% for 2 and 3-aisle systems, respectively.
