Treatment of poststroke constipation with moxibustion

Abstract: Rationale:Moxibustion, an important therapeutic measure of TCM, can stimulate acupoints to unblock the meridians and collaterals, regulate the function of qi and blood, support health, and expel pathogens. So it could be an effective and safe for the treatment of constipation and improvement of the quality of life in poststroke patients with constipation.Patient concerns:He has a history of constipation, with the defecation of hard, bound stool every 2 to 3 days with the help of glycerin enema.Diagnoses:Consti… Show more

“…Grain-sized moxibustion can significantly reduce serum ALT and AST levels and alleviate CTX-induced hepatotoxicity. Organ weight is one of the most sensitive indicators of drug toxicity, and changes in organ weights often precede morphological changes [ 10 ]. This study found that grain-sized moxibustion could significantly reduce the damage to the liver and spleen caused by CTX and increase the liver and spleen indices.…”

“…Grain-sized moxibustion, a characteristic external therapy, can directly stimulate specific acupoints to treat diseases through the photothermal stimulation of specific acupoints in a short period of time. It plays the roles of dredging the meridians, regulating qi and blood, strengthening the body, and eliminating the pathogens [ 9 , 10 ]. In terms of adjuvant chemotherapy in the treatment of malignant tumors, reports on moxibustion can be traced back to the 1970s.…”

“…Physiologic effects of warm stimulation include promotion of blood circulation through enzyme activation, mental stability through autonomic regulation, relaxation of muscle contraction, restoration of intestinal motility, and excretion of cellular waste and lactic acid through perspiration. [14,23] This mechanism is believe to be effective for the treatment of amenorrhea and abdominal obesity. Acupoints used in this treatment (ST28, SP14, and CV4) are inferior to the navel points on the meridians of the stomach, spleen, and concept vessels, which can improve deficiency and cold of the lower energizer, including the womb, and modulate the qi movement pattern of the lower energizer.…”

“…Post-stroke constipation can cause varying degrees of harm to stroke patients, ranging from mild symptoms such as abdominal pain and bloating to severe symptoms such as intestinal obstruction due to constipation. In addition, potential hazards of constipation include: The long-term accumulation of feces in the intestinal tract can decompose endotoxin and be reabsorbed by the body, thereby aggravating the damage to other systems and even the central nervous system of the body; During forced defecation, the pressure in the abdominal cavity increases, which can induce hypertension and even lead to another stroke; Aggravate the brain nerve damage at the lesion site [ 4 ], affecting the prognosis of patients [ 5 , 6 ]; Patients with post-stroke constipation often experience discomfort due to constipation symptoms, often accompanied by abnormal emotions such as anxiety and depression [ 7 ]. These seriously affect the quality of life of patients.…”
