Tree height measurement based on image processing embedded in smart mobile phone

Abstract: This paper concerns the problem of tree height measurement based on image processing embedded in smart mobile phone. A smart phone with camera and a benching marking were used to in our method. Before the tree photo was taken, a benching marking with red colored ends was leaned on the tree closely and parallel to tree trunk. Then the top point of the tree image was extracted according to their color features. And the coordinates of the two marker points on the end of the benching marking were got too. Lastly, … Show more

“…The height is measured by matching the height of rice against the pre-known height of a bar that was initially installed in the field. Work (Juan & Xin-yuan, 2009), (Dianyuan & Chengduan, 2011) adopted a similar idea for obtaining the height of trees, which is calculated via a proportion transform of the coordinates of three pre-set makers on the tree. The extension to the system was presented in (Dianyuan, 2011), which used three marker points and a perspective transformation.…”

“…The upper canopy layer (Table 1) was distinguished from the lower canopy layer (Table 1) using the Smart Measure function within the Smart Tools Android App (Android Boy 2010). This is a mobile phone application to measure the relative height of trees (Dianyuan and Chengduan 2011). Afterwards, estimates of the percentage cover of each vegetation layer were made (and noted down) from the centre point (if view the view was uninterrupted) or during a walk covering the sample area.…”
