Trends in Bariatric Surgery: Procedure Selection, Revisional Surgeries, and Readmissions

Abstract: Discharge year strongly predicted surgery type. Females, whites, and Medicaid recipients received RYGB more than referents. Conversely, males, non-whites, and insured patients were more likely to receive VSG. Underinsured, regardless of surgery type, were more likely to be readmitted. These findings have important implications for health policy and cost-containment strategies.

“…Several studies evaluated the change in bariatric surgery types in the U.S. over time [ 7 , 9 , 10 , 12 , 21 , 22 ]. Gastric banding was a popular procedure in the early 2000’s (accounting for 25–30% of all bariatric surgeries) [ 9 ] because of its safety and reversibility, which allows for the removal of original banding and the access to other surgical options [ 21 ].…”

“…4 The most commonly used bariatric and metabolic surgical techniques are adjustable gastric banding, sleeve gastrectomy (SG), and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. 7,8 Recently, especially in metabolic surgery, modifications of the first applied surgical techniques, such as SADI, transit bipartition, and modified transit bipartition have been attempted. 3,9,10 One anastomosis gastric bypass, or as called earlier MGB, is a method that has been used for about 20 years.…”

“…Bariatric (weight loss) surgery is an effective treatment of morbid obesity and the number of bariatric operations has increased substantially in recent decades. The two major currently used weight loss surgeries are laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) and laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) (1)(2)(3). The fundamental difference between these two operations is that in LSG only the anatomy of the stomach is changed, due to a large vertical gastric resection, without bypassing the stomach, in contrast to LRYGB (4).…”
