Trends in computer science research

Abstract: A burst of new keywords in grants generally precedes their burst in publications; less than one-third of new keywords burst in publications first, reflecting the importance of funding for success of new Cs fields.A typical scientist's research focus changes in roughly a 10-year cycle and often includes a once-in-a-career shift, likely in response to evolving technology creating new Cs fields.Cs continues to experience continuous and fundamental transformation; for example, in the past two decades, new topics a… Show more

“…Given that content analysis is a very costly and labor intensive endeavor, the automation of content analysis has been suggested by many authors and this is primarily achieved through the use of scientometric methods (Brent, 1984;Cheng et al, 2014;Hoonlor, Szymanski, & Zaki, 2013;Kinshuk, Huang, Sampson, & Chen, 2013;Li, 2010;Sari, Suharjito, & Widodo, 2012). Automated content analysis assumes the application of the computational methods -grounded in natural language processing and text mining -to identify key topics and themes in a specific textual corpus (e.g., set of documents, research papers, or proposals) of relevance for the study.…”

“…This phenomenon is confirmed in academic as well as industry research. The number of papers related to CS has been increasing since 1990 based on the statistics of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) [1], and Information Technology (IT) companies are leading the industrial market. Owing to the fact that the CS domain is growing explosively, the complexity of software programs is steadily increasing, and toolkits such as program languages are also evolving.…”
