Trends in Microbiological and Antibiotic Sensitivity Patterns in Infectious Keratitis

Abstract: There was a nonsignificant increase in the recovered gram-positive and gram-negative microorganisms over time. We observed an increased resistance to methicillin in almost half of the MRSA and MRCNS isolates.

“…Our positive culture rate was 48%, which is consistent with the range reported in the literature of 36–86%[1,4,7,1719] (Fig 4). Bacterial isolates represented 92% of the total cultures as seen in other series where bacteria account for 88–91% [4,17] of positive cultures.…”

“…The prognosis and success rate of infectious keratitis is guided by several factors, which includes the microbial organism virulence, extension of keratitis and associated ocular inflammation. The most common identified organism causing corneal perforations was Staphylococcus epidermidis , which correlates with another study performed in our centre, describing this organism as the most frequently isolated in corneal scrapes 5. Similarly, a group from India described S epidermidis as the most common organism found in perforated ulcers 11.…”

“…For all cases, treatment was decided by a cornea specialist. Additional treatment was given according to the specific aetiology; patients with infectious keratitis were studied with corneal scrapes and sent for culture as described elsewhere,5 and treated initially with a broad-spectrum antibiotic, antiviral or antifungal agents administered according to each specific case, and treatment was adjusted according to the antibiogram if available. When a recurrence of infection was evident, new cultures were done and specific treatment was given for each case accordingly.…”

“…Although usually effective in eliminating the infectious agent, the incidence of resistance of infectious agents to antibiotics and antivirals is increasing. (2, 3) In conditions such as fungal and Acanthamoeba infections, topical medications are not very effective and mixed bacterial and fungal infections probably have the worst outcomes of all. (4) Another problem is the fact that antimicrobial agents, and the preservatives in the topical medications, are toxic and can prevent corneal healing.…”
