Triacontanol and Its Second Messenger 9-β-l(+)-Adenosine as Plant Growth Substances

Abstract: Triacontanol (TRIA), a common constituent of plant waxes, was first shown in 1977 to be an active growth substance which at nanomolar concentrations increased the growth and yield of crops. TRIA is used to increase crop yields on millions of hectares, particularly in Asia. Many investigators have shown that it affects several basic metabolic processes including photosynthesis, nutrient uptake, and enzyme activity. However, the initial site of action has not been elucidated. TRIA rapidly elicits a second messen… Show more

“…TRIA has been reported to enhance photosynthesis and water and mineral nutrients' uptake, regulate activities of various enzymes and increase the level of various organic compounds in leaf tissues (Ries & Houtz 1983;Ries 1991;Naeem et al 2009Naeem et al , 2010. TRIA is known as an antioxidizing agent because it can effectively inhibit both enzymatic and non-enzymatic peroxidative breakdown of lipids (Ramanarayan et al 2000).…”

“…Several efforts have been made to elucidate the mechanism of TRIA action Ries 1991;Ries et al 1993). Assumption of a cascade effect led to the identification of 9-b-L (')-adenosine as a second messenger of TRIA (Ries 1991;Ries et al 1993).…”

“…Several efforts have been made to elucidate the mechanism of TRIA action Ries 1991;Ries et al 1993). Assumption of a cascade effect led to the identification of 9-b-L (')-adenosine as a second messenger of TRIA (Ries 1991;Ries et al 1993). TRIA rapidly elicits the second messenger (TRIM) in rice (Oryza sativa L.), which at nanomolar concentrations causes the plants to respond in a manner similar to TRIA (Ries 1991).…”
