Triangulum II. Not Especially Dense After All*

Abstract: Among the Milky Way satellites discovered in the past three years, TriangulumII has presented the most difficulty in revealing its dynamical status. Kirby et al. identified it as the most dark-matter-dominated galaxy known, with a mass-to-light ratio within the half-light radius of M L 3600 2100On the other hand, Martin et al. measured an outer velocity dispersion that is 3.5±2.1 times larger than the central velocity dispersion, suggesting that the system might not be in equilibrium. From new multi-epoch K… Show more

“…Data for Sag, Crater II, and Bootes are from Table 1 of H19, and data for Antlia are from Torrealba et al (2019). Vertical arrows indicate upper limits for Tucana III (data from Simon et al 2017), Triangulum II (Kirby et al 2017), Segue 2 (Kirby et al 2013), Grus (Walker et al 2016), and Hydra II (Kirby et al 2015). accounting for this would suffice to bring it on the anticorrelation of Figure 6. To this category, one may add Crater (cyan point; see Sect.…”

“…see Gregory et al 2019 comparison of FORS2 multislit versus FLAMES/GIRAFFE fibres observations of the Tucana dSph) but sometimes even when the same instrument and configuration mode is adopted (e.g. comparison of Keck/DEIMOS R ∼ 6500 observations of the Triangulum II system, Kirby et al 2017a). However, we have vali-dated our data-reduction and analysis procedure in multiple studies that included sub-samples of repeated exposures for the same stars, which yielded consistent results.…”

“…The chemical evolution of Sr behaves differently among dwarf galaxies with different masses. Stars in several UFDs such as Canes Venatici I, II, Hercules, and Triangulum II are enhanced in [Sr/Ba] (François et al 2016;Kirby et al 2017). As shown in Section 4.2, 5.2% and 5.9% of stars have [Sr/Ba] > 1 in models B and D, respectively, reflecting the ejecta from ECSNe with Sr but no Ba (note that RMSs give [Sr/Ba] ≈ 1 at low metallicity).…”
