Triceps nerve to deltoid nerve transfer after an unsatisfactory intra-plexus neurotization of the posterior division of the upper trunk

Abstract: HighlightsWe present 3 cases of late distal nerve transfer to deltoid. The outcome was excellent despite the delay from time of injury. This was explained by the presence of partial muscle innervation.

“…However, when the mode of injury is root avulsion or associated with a heavily scarred injury zone, neurotization, then, provides a more rational option (Rhode & Wolfe, 2007). Moreover; neurotization provides relatively predictable short recovery time expanding the indications for reconstruction to include cases with either late presentation or primary failed reconstruction (Al‐Qattan et al, 2017).…”

“…Triceps nerve-to-deltoid nerve transfer has become the standard-of-care in patients with isolated axillary nerve injury, isolated C5-C6 root avulsion of the brachial plexus, and in salvage of the paralyzed deltoid muscle following unsatisfactory intra-plexus neurotization of the posterior division of the upper trunk of the brachial plexus [ [1] , [2] , [3] ].…”
