Triceps Tendon Ruptures: A Systematic Review

Abstract: TTR is an uncommon injury. Risks factors for rupture include renal disease and anabolic steroid use. Lateral elbow radiographs should be scrutinized for the DKS in patients with extension weakness. Outcomes are excellent following repair, and rates of rerupture are low.

“…The etiology of tendon rupture in the context of chronic renal failure requiring hemodialysis includes secondary hyperparathyroidism, corticosteroid treatment, metabolic acidosis, fluoroquinolone administration, and postdialysis amyloidosis [ 12 15 ]. The present case showed secondary hyperparathyroidism, which is a typical complication of chronic kidney disease.…”

“…Complete tendon ruptures must be treated surgically in order to regain complete function recovery [ 12 , 18 20 ]. The two most common techniques are transosseous sutures (gold standard) or suture anchors, which have both yielded excellent outcomes [ 19 , 21 23 ].…”

“…At the 2 years follow-up, we have no sign of rerupture. Supervising should be continued because in the triceps tendon repair, 6 % of cases of rerupture were reported at 36 months [11].…”

“…Triceps tendon tears are commonly associated with renal disease and delays in initial diagnosis [17]. In a review of 184 triceps tendon repairs, there was no difference in eventual discharge from medical care when comparing early (< 3 weeks) or delayed (3-12 weeks) surgery.…”
