`Triggerless' triggering of vacuum arcs

Abstract: Vacuum arcs can be initiated without external means of power enhancement at the cathode surface (by using a high-voltage trigger, laser triggering, and so on). Arc initiation by simply applying the relatively low voltage of the arc power supply is possible if the cathode-anode-separating insulator is coated with a conducting layer and the current at the layer-cathode interface is concentrated at one or a few contact points. The local power density at these contact points can exceed which is sufficient for pla… Show more

“…The cathodes are pulsed using the "triggerless" arc initiation method [13]. The streaming plasma was guided and transported through a curved magnetic macroparticle filter [14] into the magnetic plasma homogenizer [15,16] to deposit highquality films.…”

“…In the present study, we have employed open-air N 2 /He DBD plasmas to functionalize the surface of hydrogen-free DLC films. The films were prepared by the filtered cathodic arc which is a well known technique for the deposition of hard carbon DLC films with low hydrogen content [16][17][18]. Surface analysis and characterization after functionalization of the surfaces by DBD were performed using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and contact angle measurements.…”

“…From the data of Table 1 it is apparent that the 300 V bias resulted in a higher sp 3 content than the 120 V, which is somewhat surprising since it is generally known that carbon ion energies of about 100-200 eV lead to the highest sp 3 content. The formation of diamond bonds is facilitated by densification via energetic condensation, i.e.…”

“…Repetitively pulsed arc ignition is facilitated by the "triggerless" or "self-trigger" method, i.e. by a current driven between anode and cathode via a conducting coating on the cathode-enclosing ceramic [3].…”
