“…In this study, db/db mice appeared to exhibit symptoms such as polydipsia, polyuria, hyperglycemia and obesity, especially in mice they exhibited increased albuminuria and mesangial matrix expansion, suggesting that db/db mice could be used as a model of progressive DN as previously reported. 32,33 Albuminuria, an indicator that implies to the impaired glomerular filtration barrier, is a dominant biochemical feature of developing DN. Progressive expansion of the mesangial matrix is a key histological appearance of DN.…”

“…Decrease in the level of IL-6 and inflammation could be correlated to the improvement of the antioxidant enzymes. Furthermore, it also protects kidney from functional and histopathologic abnormalities of DM [137,140]. Studies have also demonstrated the role of fenugreek seeds in improving glucose homeostasis and renal function in alloxan induced diabetic rats by delaying carbohydrate digestion and absorption thereby improving kidney's antioxidant status [138].…”

“…Its seeds, which mature into long pods, are used as a time-honored remedy for the treatment of diabetes [136]. Several studies has shown it's hypoglycemic, hypocholesterolemic and hyperinsulinemic effects both in patients with IDDM and NIDDM as well as in experimental diabetic animals [137]. Treatment of diabetic rats with fenugreek seed powder for 12 weeks has found to elevate the activity of CAT and SOD as well as the concentration of GSH thereby reversing oxidative damage.…”

“…A huge number of studies have returned positive findings, indicating the efficacy of fenugreek seed as a functional food that can be beneficial in health and disease. Fenugreek is well known for its multiple pharmacological properties including antidiabetic, antioxidative, hypocholesterolemic, antineoplastic, antiinflammatory, antiulcerogenic, antipyretic, immunomodulatory and antitumor (Dixit et al, 2010;Satheeshkumar et al, 2010;Xue et al, 2011). Different active components of fenugreek seeds have been identified and isolated such as polyphenolic flavonoids which exhibit most common properties, that is, hypoglycemic, hypocholesterolemic, hypotriglyceridemic and antiperoxidative (Gupta & Nair, 1999), steroid saponins exhibiting anti-inflammatory and uterus and lactation-stimulating properties (Petit et al, 1995), polysaccharides such as galactomannans contains antidiabetic effects (Madar & Shomer, 1990) and an amino acid 4-hydroxyisoleucine has been shown to possess insulin-mimetic properties (Broca et al, 2004).…”
