Triple helix and its evolution: a systematic literature review

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify the most extensively studied topics with respect to the triple, quadruple and quintuple helix models developed to explain these links. The review also focusses on ascertaining future trends within this field. Design/methodology/approach Relevant documents obtained from a search in the Institute for Scientific Information’s Web of Science were submitted to bibliometric analysis using VOSviewer software. Findings The results of this systematic review illustrat… Show more

“…Third, collaboration among diverse social and economic agents ( N-Helix) facilitates the emergence of global knowledge-intensive initiatives (Del Giudice et al, 2017 ). These environments facilitate integrated collaborations, co-created shared values, cultivated innovation eco-systems, unleashed exponential technologies, and extraordinarily rapid adoptions (Galvao et al, 2019 ).…”

“…Individuals will better value service if they do not have to pay for it; in this sense, DSE will positively affect stakeholder satisfaction (H3b). In this vein, DSE will increase users’ satisfaction since N-Helix initiatives can provide better quality resources and disseminate high-level innovation to stakeholders (Bonaccorsi & Piccaluga, 1994 ; Galvao et al, 2019 ). Therefore, we anticipate a positive effect of the N-Helix collaboration on stakeholder satisfaction through DSE (H3c).…”

“…Constantly changing markets due to globalization have meant that knowledge and innovation have become key factors in the sustainable development of any economy, and industries have become increasingly dependent on academic research to generate marketable innovations and economic growth [7,8]. This new need for innovation has given rise to the triple helix theory.…”

“…This new need for innovation has given rise to the triple helix theory. This model is associated with the concept of academic entrepreneurship, because seeks to define the new entrepreneurial dimension of universities, in which they and other knowledge-producing organizations play a strong role [7,9]. This theory was further developed to the quadruple helix, which involves a collaboration between governance, academia, industry, and citizens.…”

“…In recent years, a transition to large-scale collaborations has been observed across the biomedical and pharmaceutical industries leading to centres such as the collaboration between Imec (research in nano and digital technology) and Janssen Pharmaceutica in the Benelux [6]. Collaborations with more than two stakeholders often fall within the 'triple helix' model comprising academia, industry and government [7].…”
