Triple Shape Memory Effects of Cross-Linked Polyethylene/Polypropylene Blends with Cocontinuous Architecture

Abstract: In this paper, the triple shape memory effects (SMEs) observed in chemically cross-linked polyethylene (PE)/polypropylene (PP) blends with cocontinuous architecture are systematically investigated. The cocontinuous window of typical immiscible PE/PP blends is the volume fraction of PE (v(PE)) of ca. 30-70 vol %. This architecture can be stabilized by chemical cross-linking. Different initiators, 2,5-dimethyl-2,5-di(tert-butylperoxy)-hexane (DHBP), dicumylperoxide (DCP) coupled with divinylbenzene (DVB) (DCP-DV… Show more

“…The similar drawbacks are contained in some recently published papers [17,18]. One-way 'triple'-shape behavior of crystallizable covalent networks on the basis of PE/polypropylene (PP) blends with co-continuous phase morphology and on the basis of PCL grafted by 0.5-2.0 wt% of polydopamin (PDA) was evaluated as 'pronounced' and 'good', respectively, using temperature dependencies of SM recovery of these networks after their two-step programming [17,18]. However, this interpretation cannot be accepted because the used temperature-time program contained the isothermal segment between two temperature ramps just within temperature range where the first step of SM recovery strain arises.…”

“…Invertible two-way SM effect can be observed in each crystallizable polymer network if the suitable # c and load values are chosen [7][8][9]17]. The results demonstrated in Figure 9 prove that HDPE cross-linked by peroxide is not an exception to this statement [48].…”

“…21,22 To date, TSMPs have been widely applied in intelligent medical devices, assembling systems, and minimally invasive surgery. 18,23 However, in the face of everincreasing complex demands on the use of intelligent medical devices, TSMPs can be used under two transition temperatures which provide more flexible application in intelligent medical devices compared to the traditional SMPs with only one particular transition temperature. Among them, the vascular application has received considerable attention.…”

“…3,4 With this attractive property, SMP has great potential in biomedical and surgical materials, smart fabrics, aerospace industry, temperature sensors, and actuators. [5][6][7] During the past decades, many polymers have been adopted to prepare SMPs, such as polyolefines, 8 polystyrene, 9 polysiloxane, 10 poly(methyl-acrylates), 11 polycaprolactone, 12 and DNA. 13 To realize shape memory effect, polymers need to fulfill suitable molecular networks architecture, which consists of two aspects: reversible phase and fixed phase.…”
