This species is native to India, Madagascar, the Arabian Peninsula, Brazil, Central Africa, and West Africa and was once used as an introduced pasture legume in Australia and parts of the United States. , This usage was discontinued in the 1960s after determination of the presence of high levels of hepatotoxic indospicine ( 1 ) in the plant .
