Defining rock mass geotechnical properties is a critical step in the process of open-pit slope design. Geotechnical engineers assess the frequently highly altered rocks of metallic mineral deposits by applying standardized geotechnical classifications primarily developed for underground mining operations or design of civil structures such as tunnels and cut slopes. In some cases, the projects do not consider additional aspects of the rock masses, such as: zoning according to rock mass alteration schemes, prediction of blasting disturbance and weathering depth, rock strength loss over time, swelling effects, etc. Unfortunately, in some mineral deposits, many of these aspects appear to overlap, leading to difficulties in the process of open-pit design. In the case of neglecting such complex issues, there can be serious consequences in regard to future safe mine operation or even failure of slope/s. The paper presents findings from Macedonian legislation and literature overview on these aspects, regulations from other countries where available, as well as personal experiences of the authors. Some suggestions on the scope of geotechnical investigation works are briefly presented. It is considered that a more serious approach is needed in order to achieve a better understanding of the “long term” geotechnical behaviour of rock masses in such high risk environments.

Background Mapping and monitoring the state of activity of landslides is crucial for effective landslide management and risk assessment. This study presents a novel approach using vegetation anomalies indicator (VAI) derived from high-resolution remotely sensed data for landslide state of activity mapping. The study focuses on the Kundasang area in Sabah, Malaysia, known for its tectonic activity. High-resolution remotely sensed data were utilized to assist in the manual inventory process of landslide activities and to generate VAIs as input for modeling. Results The landslide inventory process identified active, dormant, and relict landslides. The resulting inventory map was divided into training (70%) and validation (30%) datasets for modeling purposes. Seven main VAIs, including canopy gap, mature woody vegetation, primary forest, Root Strength Index (RSI), and water-loving tree, were produced and used as the input for the classification process using Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) methods. The result showed that SVM outperforms ANN for both deep-seated and shallow rotational landslides, with an overall accuracy of 68.6% and 80.7%, respectively. Furthermore, an evaluation of SVM revealed that the radial basis function (RBF) kernel yielded the highest accuracies, whereas ANN performed best with a hyperbolic tangent (tanh) activation function. Conclusion The accurate classification of landslide state of activity using VAI provides several benefits, including the ability to map and classify landslide activity in forested areas, characterize vegetation characteristics specific to each activity state, and enable continuous monitoring in areas where field monitoring is impractical. This research opens new possibilities for more accurate landslide activity mapping and monitoring, thereby improving disaster risk reduction and management in tectonically active regions.

The Basel Mission played an important role as one of the labour-recruiting agents for the Chartered Company, which enlisted Hakka workers and brought them to Sabah on very attractive and favourable terms (Tsang 1983). These workers were settled in Inanam, Menggatal, Telipok, and Kudat (see Figure 1) and formed the early nuclei of the Chinese settlements in the respective towns (Han 1975:37).…”

The impact of religion on language maintenance and shift

This article explores religious impact on language maintenance and language shift in two Hakka communities in Malaysia. While research has shown a trend towards language shift in these communities, whether religious institutions can play a role in heritage language maintenance remained unclear. The key findings are as follows: (i) language use patterns differ among various religious groups; (ii) this difference is due mainly to religious practices, that is, whether a heritage language is used as the ‘language of religion’; and (iii) most religious institutions, except Taoist temples and Basel churches, seem to fuel shifting. However, the tendency to move towards the ‘bi-language of religion’ threatens even the efforts of Basel churches. The study indicates interesting possibilities regarding religious impact but also shows, paradoxically, that the priority of Hakka-based religious institutions is to promote their religions, not to sustain the threatened heritage language.
