Background: Obesity is an important issue in birds. As in other species it results from an imbalance between dietary calorie intake and calorie usage. Therefore, its causes and management require knowledge of the normal diet and biological activities of these species. Although causes and effects of obesity are largely similar across species boundaries, there is sufficient diversity between bird groups and species that this article will concentrate on just one group – the Psittacidae (parrots and cockatoos).Aim of the article: This article discusses the issue of obesity and its causes, as well as the recognition of the problem and the consequences of obesity in parrots. It also covers the management of obesity and its prevention.
