Truly eccentric – I. Revisiting eight single-eccentric planetary systems

Abstract: We examine eight known single-eccentric planetary systems in light of recently released large data archives and new analysis techniques. For four of these systems (HD 7449, HD 65216, HD 89744, HD 92788) we find evidence for additional long-period companions. HD 65216c is a Jupiter analog, with a period of 14.7 yr, e = 0.18, and m sin i of 2M Jup , whilst the remaining candidate companions move on as-yet-incomplete orbits. Our results highlight the importance of revisiting the analysis of known exoplanetary sys… Show more

“…We also report updated orbital parameters for HD 50499b (Vogt et al 2005), as well as the detection of HD 50499c, which has previously been noted by Vogt et al (2005), Butler et al (2017), and Barbato et al (2018). We also report the updated orbital parameters of HD 92788b detected by Fischer et al (2001) and confirm the recent detection of HD 92788c (Wittenmyer et al 2019).…”

“…We present updated orbital parameters for a known exoplanet around HD 98649 (Marmier et al 2013). We also report updated orbital parameters for HD 92788b (Fischer et al 2001) and confirm the detection of HD 92788c (Wittenmyer et al 2019). Moreover, we report the discovery of a new planet around HD 50499 and report updated orbital parameters for HD 50499b (Vogt et al 2005).…”

“…Such an outcome is far from unusual -and, indeed, it is often the case that, with more data, a single eccentric planet seen in RV data is resolved to actually be two planets moving on near-circular orbits (e.g. Wittenmyer et al 2013Wittenmyer et al , 2019. For now, however, we can do no more than to call the existence of HD 67087 c into question, pending the acquisition of such additional data.…”

“…We determine the best-fitting parameters and uncertainties for each system using the code Exoplanet Mcmc Parallel tEmpering Radial velOcity fitteR 1 (ASTROEMPEROR), which uses thermodynamic methods combined with MCMC. Our approach has previously been established and described in Marshall et al (2019) and Wittenmyer et al (2019). We summarize the input values and constraints used in the fitting presented in this work for the sake of reproducibility.…”
