Truncal Acne: An Overview

Abstract: Acne is a relatively common disease of the pilosebaceous units. Many aspects of facial acne have been studied. However, there is limited evidence regarding truncal acne. Truncal acne is also observed in a significant number of patients, but it is often ignored by patients and clinicians. Although the pathogenesis of facial and trunk acne is considered to be similar, the characteristics of the skin on the trunk and face are thought to be different. As truncal acne can cause scars on large areas of the body and … Show more

“…2 Patients with combined facial and truncal acne experience a a greater negative impact on quality of life than patients with facial acne alone, with truncal acne reportedly more often neglected, underdiagnosed, and undermanaged. 5 However, the formation of acne sequelae may exacerbate the burden that patients with acne already experience. 3 The psychological impact of acne-induced scarring is high, with patients often feeling embarrassed and uncomfortable and lacking self-esteem, which can lead to anxiety, depression, and a self-perception of decreased employability.…”

“…Severe acne is characterised by a large number of nodules and either a large number of papulespustules or both. Acne fulminans, acne conglobata, and the follicular occlusion triad are the most severe and damaging types of the illness (11). For each of the six areas (face/forehead, left and right cheeks, nose, chin, and chest and upper back), the severity and distribution of pilosebaceous units are rated from 0 (no lesions), 1 (one comedone), 2 (one papule), 3 (one pustule), and 4 (one nodule), with each rating multiplied by a factor specific to that area.…”

“…4 , 5 , 6 Although the pathogenesis of facial and truncal acne may be considered similar, the characteristics of the skin on both sites are somehow different. 7 Moreover, while facial acne has been extensively studied, there are still few studies published regarding truncal acne. Facial acne is characterized by non‐inflammatory lesions such as comedones and inflammatory lesions such as papules, pustules, nodules, or cysts, 8 , 9 and truncal acne can also range from non‐inflammatory comedones to inflammatory papules, pustules, and nodules, and can more often cause scars in large areas of the body.…”
