Trunk muscle activity patterns in a person with spinal cord injury walking with different un-powered exoskeletons: A case study

Abstract: These findings prompt further development of un-powered exoskeletons and investigation into trunk muscle functions in patients with spinal cord injury when walking with un-powered exoskeletons.

“…The raw EMG signals were filtered by a bidirectional Butterworth band-pass filter with cutoff values of 20 and 500 Hz [31,32] in a custom script written in MATLAB (MathWorks Inc., Natick, MA, USA). The signals were full-wave rectified and filtered by a low-pass filter at 10 Hz [33,34]. The filtered EMG signals were then used to calculate the root mean square (RMS EMG) with a window of 10 ms to describe the muscle activation during movement [33].…”

“…In addition, the filtered EMG signals were used to calculate the mean of the EMG (MEMG) to describe the work of one muscle during movement. Since the gait cycle was usually normalized to 0~100%, the sEMG data acquired synchronously should be also interpolated into 0~100% to describe how the muscles were activated during the gait [34,35]. Therefore, all the RMS EMGs were interpolated into 101 points corresponding to the gait cycle.…”

“…Then, a fourth-order Butterworth band-pass filter with cutoff values between 10 Hz and 500 Hz was applied [ 14 16 ]. The root mean square was calculated with a moving 100 ms window to smooth the signals [ 12 , 17 ]. All rectification, filtering, and smoothing were processed in the software (EMGworks 4.1.7, Analysis).…”

“…The static analysis method for the strength and few analyses of relationship between strength and muscle activation limit our knowledge on the characteristics of the abnormal patterns. The dynamic analysis between the kinematic or dynamic parameters and the muscle activation has been reported to be beneficial to understand patients' movement relationship between the extrinsic characteristics and the inherent nature [ 12 ]. Therefore, a dynamic analysis on the performing process is needed to explore the relationship between the strength and muscle activation and investigate the elements influencing the abnormal strength patterns.…”
