The tsunami deposits left by the 26 December 2004 tsunami in the coastal zone of Thailand were studied within two months of the event and before any significant postdepositional changes could occur. The sediment structure and texture (grain size), as well as its thickness and spatial distribution, were documented for the tsunami deposits in 12 shore-perpendicular transects from areas of various tsunami runup and wave heights. The tsunami deposits were as thick as 0.4 m and were located as far as 1.5 km inland. They were composed mostly of poorly sorted sand and often consisted of one to four normally graded, massive or laminated layers. The deposits generally became finer in the landward direction; however, landward thinning trend of the deposits is not clear, and the maximum accumulation often is not located close to the shoreline but rather is further inland. In comparable coastal environments with similar available sediment sources the tsunami size (represented as the tsunami runup height) is reflected in the resulting deposits. Larger tsunamis are associated with deposits that are thicker, have a maximum accumulation located farther inland, include a finer sediment fraction (likely from deeper offshore areas) and frequently are composed of normally graded layers.

Efectos geomorfológicos del tsunami de RESUMENEl análisis de imágenes satelitales junto a observaciones de campo, permitieron la identificación y descripción de las consecuencias geomorfológicas que dejó el tsunami de Chile de 2010 en el litoral arenoso La Trinchera, ubicado frente a la zona de máximo slip del terremoto que lo generó. El tsunami abrió breaches y construyó abanicos en cordones litorales y dunas; erosionó dunas vegetadas y formó pedestales; hizo retroceder la línea de costa un centenar de metros; formó flood scours de hasta 350 m de largo en la ribera sur de los ríos Mataquito y Huenchullami; y erosionó casi en su totalidad la barra litoral del estuario del río Mataquito y parte de la barra del río Huenchullami. Los efectos directos del tsunami y la extensión de su inundación, fueroncontrolados por el tipo de duna dominante, en este caso, las familias de los barjanes y de dunas parabólicas. Con el tiempo se generaron fenómenos cómo la proliferación de aspersiones, transformaciones en la morfología de dunas y la rápida recuperación de la barra del estuario del río Mataquito. Todos estos procesos sugieren una alteración en el intercambio de sedimentos en el sistema playa-duna.Palabras clave: Tsunami de Chile de 2010, geomorfología, litoral arenoso, imágenes satelitales. ABSTRACTThe analysis of satellite images together with field observations, allowed the identification and description of the geomorphological consequences of the Chilean tsunami of 2010 in La Trinchera. La Trinchera is a sandy coastline located in front of the area of the earthquake's maximum slip. The tsunami opened breaches and built fans in beach ridges and dunes; eroded vegetated dunes and formed pedestals; produced a retreat of the coastline of hundreds of meters; formed flood scours up to 350 m long in the southern bank of the Mataquito and Huenchullami rivers; and almost entirely eroded the sand spits of the Mataquito River estuary and part of the sand bar of Huenchullami river. Both the direct effects of the tsunami and the scope of the inundation were controlled by the dominant type of dune which corresponds to barchans and parabolic dunes. Since the tsunami several processes have been observed, such as proliferation of sand sheets, transformations in the morphology of dunes and rapid recovery of the sand spits of the Mataquito River estuary. All of these processes suggest an alteration in the exchange of sediment in the beach-dune system.

Current models used to assess earthquake and tsunami hazards are inadequate where creep dominates a subduction megathrust. Here we report geological evidence for large tsunamis, occurring on average every 300–340 years, near the source areas of the 1946 and 1957 Aleutian tsunamis. These areas bookend a postulated seismic gap over 200 km long where modern geodetic measurements indicate that the megathrust is currently creeping. At Sedanka Island, evidence for large tsunamis includes six sand sheets that blanket a lowland facing the Pacific Ocean, rise to 15 m above mean sea level, contain marine diatoms, cap terraces, adjoin evidence for scour, and date from the past 1700 years. The youngest sheet and modern drift logs found as far as 800 m inland and >18 m elevation likely record the 1957 tsunami. Previously unrecognized tsunami sources coexist with a presently creeping megathrust along this part of the Aleutian Subduction Zone.
