Tuberculosis Prevalence and Predictors Among Health Care-Seeking People Screened for Cough of Any Duration in Ethiopia: A Multicenter Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract: BackgroundTuberculosis (TB) remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in sub-Saharan Africa. This high burden is mainly attributed to low case detection and delayed diagnosis. We aimed to determine the prevalence and predictors of TB among health care-seeking people screened for cough of any duration in Ethiopia.MethodsIn this multicenter cross-sectional study, we screened 195,713 (81.2%) for cough of any duration. We recruited a sample of 1,853 presumptive TB (PTB) cases and assigned them into three gr… Show more

“…Based on the duration of the cough, three different algorithms were used to detect cases of tuberculosis in children. The rst algorithm is a cough for ≥ 2 weeks, followed by a chest x-ray with all ndings, followed by GeneXpert/AFB swab microscopy, and with this algorithm, tuberculosis is diagnosed 63% of the time, which is less than the survey rate in all age groups in the same area, 81.2% of PTB cases [30].…”

“…The risk of developing TB is high among clinically high-risk groups compared to the general population. 7 , 8 One of the pillars of the “End TB Strategy 2016–2035” is the systematic screening of people who are at high risk for TB. 9 The goal of screening is to identify patients as soon as possible to reduce unnecessary delays in diagnosis and treatment, which lowers the risk of poor treatment outcomes, health sequelae, and negative social and economic effects of TB for affected individuals and their families.…”

“…Improving the health status of the Indonesian people at an optimal level is the spirit of the ideals contained in the Indonesian Health Development Goals (Long et al, 2020). The real hope for development in the health sector is to improve the quality of health, both public health in general and individual health (Mohammed et al, 2022). Indonesia is the second country with the highest number of tuberculosis (TB) patients in the world (Charles et al, 2017).…”
