Tubomanometry. Values in ears with traumatic and chronic perforations

Abstract: The tubal function of 68 patients with a unilateral traumatic perforation of the tympanic membrane and 116 ears of 94 patients with chronic otitis media were examined by equalization manometry. The values obtained in the traumatic group are regarded as being characteristic of normal tubal function: the patients were able to equalize +/- 30 hPa difference in pressure with between three and seven swallows. Only 25% of the ears with a dry central perforation and none with an infected central perforation were able… Show more

“…ETD is a well-recognized comorbid manifestation of inflammatory diseases of the nasal cavity and nasal sinus [ 13 ]. However, due to the lack of appropriate ETD-specific assessment instruments, quantification of the prevalence of ETD had been limited before [ 20 ]. The TMM test was reported by Estève et al [ 21 ] and has been widely used to evaluate eustachian tubes objectively [ 22 ].…”

“…They found dysfunction in 76% cases (gross dysfunction in 17% cases and partial dysfunction in 59% cases). In 1993, Mink and Bauer [18] studied tubal function in 68 patients with unilateral traumatic perforation and 116 years of 94 patients of chronic suppurative otitis media by equalization manometry. The values attained in traumatic group were regarded as normal, only 25% with dry central perforation and none with an infected central perforation had normal ETF.…”

“…[7,8] Mink said about his experience on tubomanometry that, this test was designed to examine the patient's ability or inability to equalize a negative or positive pressure in the tympanic cavity by swallowing. [9] The test has two advantages: it is relatively simple and it closely simulates the main physiological function of the tube.…”
